Burgau is a great location from which to explore the whole of this region of the Algarve. You can get to Luz and Lagos very easily via public transport and for those who have a car the whole area comes alive. Lagos is less than 10 minutes easy drive away and in here you will find an enormous variety of shops and restaurants, catering for every ones taste buds, from Portuguese to French and from Indian to Italian (and we know the best restaurant for Lasagne in the world.........”probably”) and lots more…………….. If you go further west towards Sagres and Cape St Vincent there are some absolutely stunning beaches and views that will take your breath away, this region of the coast is truly spectacular and a must for water and wind sport enthusiasts.
Burgau lies on the Western Algarve and is approx 50 minutes drive from Faro airport. You can hire cars at the airport or at the villa. We can arrange transfers to and from the airport for those that prefer not to drive.
The drive from the airport is a very simple one as virtually all the journey is on the internal motorway and we give detailed and very easy directions to our villa. A car is not necessary for those who stay at our villa, as you can travel by bus to Luz and Lagos etc, but a car would give more freedom to explore, and our visitors guide in the villa is packed full of information, not just from us but you too.
We have been coming to Burgau and the unspoilt Western Algarve for about 20 years. The village of Burgau has a resident population of approx 2500 and has retained its atmosphere as a traditional Portuguese fishing village.
The village is part of a protected nature reserve and so will remain unspoilt for many years to come. People return year after year to Burgau to enjoy the warm and friendly atmosphere and many such people leave comments at a lovely independent site for Burgau and you may find this site gives you an all round flavour of the village. The village is large enough to have several supermarkets and an extensive array of restaurants, bars, cafes and shops, but small enough to stay personal and still retain its fishing heritage and Portuguese flavour
The beach at Burgau is really picturesque and is sheltered by cliffs giving the bay a very secluded feel. The beach is a glorious blue-flag beach and shelves gently into the sea. We have tried lots of the restaurants in the village and have left our own comments in the visitors guide and the beach bar (literally on the beach) is a great place for informal meals at night and during the day.
There is a tremendous choice of places to eat and the fish is always a great choice and is caught daily, although our son is always talking of the local lamb dishes! For nature lovers and keen walkers the area is a delight as there are many lovely coastal walks to the West (to Salema) and to the East (to Luz). There is also a sports center for those wishing to play lots of games.
